What are central nervous system (CNS) depressants?

The depressant drug category includes tranquilizers, sedatives, and hypnotics. These substances can slow brain activity, producing a drowsy or calming effect that is medically beneficial to those suffering from anxiety or sleep disorders. With long-term use or misuse, however, they often have harmful consequences and dangerous withdrawal symptoms.
