What is kratom?

Kratom comes from a tree native to Southeast Asia; some of the naturally occurring chemical compounds in this plant have been reported to have pain-relieving properties. Kratom has also been reported as a means of managing the symptoms of substance withdrawal and cravings, particularly relating to the use of opioids.

Kratom and Kratom-based products are currently accessible in many regions, but are not approved for any use by the United States FDA. Kratom and all kratom-based products (derivatives of Kratom) were recently designated a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance by the state of Connecticut. Connecticut is the 7th state in the U.S. to designate the substance in this way. Learn more about Connecticut's decision here.

Research on kratom is still relatively new. The use and misuse of kratom has increased significantly in recent years.
