How does Xylazine Affect the Body?

Short term effects:

  • Drowsiness
  • Amnesia
  • Slow breathing
  • Decreased heart rate
  • Dangerously low blood pressure
  • Death

Effects of Injecting Xylazine:

Individuals who inject xylazine or drug mixtures containing xylazine often develop soft tissue injuries, including skin ulcers and abscesses. Skin ulcers can occur beyond the site of injection, such as anywhere with a cut or bite.

These injuries can lead to rotting of the tissue, or necrosis, and may result in amputation.

Physical Dependence

An individual can develop a physical dependence to xylazine itself. Because xylazine is often combined with opioids, a person can become addicted to both substances. Individuals looking for treatment can call the 24/7 Access Line at 1.800.563.4086.
